The lights flickered once. And then they went out. The room was illuminated by several candles around the altar. Black candles. The girl on the altar was not tied down, but she didn’t have to be. Unconsciousness doesn’t allow for movement. Her long dark hair was fanned above her head, hanging over the altar’s edges. She lay flat on her back with her arms crossed over her chest.
A man stood above her, studying her with an unreadable expression should anyone happen to see it. This was not an easy situation. At first the spell had been just to get the girl to trust him, to help him. She was to believe that he loved her as much as she loved him. That she meant everything to him, when in truth she was only a means to an end. A perfect sacrifice for what he truly deserved.
He reached out to stroke her cheek but stopped himself, clutching the handle of his athame tightly. This wouldn’t be the first time he had summoned this demon. But, it was the first time a blood sacrifice larger than a goat had been required by it.
He could do this. Nothing to it. It wasn’t as if he cared about her as he had claimed to. It wasn’t like he loved her or anything. He was with her for the sole purpose of carrying out this sacrifice. He glanced to one side of the room where another woman lay. This one blonde.
Ari would be waking up soon...maybe. He wasn't sure exactly how hard he'd hit her with the spell that had knocked her unconscious. It had been her turn to guard them and he had needed to get her out of the way so he could do this. The ritual had to be completed tonight.
It would also have to be soon. The others would wonder when Ari didn't...report in or whatever she did. They would also wonder when the dark majicks rose when he started. He was fairly confident it would take them some time to find them, however. And by then it would be too late.
The girl on the altar...Kalika had helped him through most of the process already, not knowing what would be required of her in the end. Charles had tried to step in...posting round the clock 'protection,' usually in the form of Ari or Zoe. They were Slayers after all. Or if they weren't available, Charles had watched them himself. But...Kalika had still come back to him. He was a little surprised by that. That the others hadn't been able to talk her out of it.
She really did love him, and it wasn't even because of a spell. He had been willing to use one to get her here had it been required, but the only one needed was the one he'd used to put her to...sleep. He didn't love her in return. That was why he was able to do this. Why he was willing to do this.
He almost wanted to postpone it...No doubt at least Zoe was on the way. She had an undeniable and indescribable connection to Kalika and probably knew how much danger the darker girl was in. It could be amusing to make the blonde watch him plunge the blade into Kalika's heart as the demon rose...
Of course distraction wasn't welcome so he should just do it now. Before the others did find them. He moved to one side of the altar and looked down at girl lying peacefully there. If she'd known what was going on she wouldn't look nearly so peaceful. He raised the knife above his head, concentrating on the exact place to strike. Her blood would be what called the demon into exsistance on this plane.
As the knife began its descent, the lights suddenly flickered on, causing the blade to waver and miss the heart and the killing blow that was desired. But that didn't seem to matter. As the blood began to flow, the room was plunged into darkness once more. The candles had gone out and the only light came from the portal that was opening above the altar.
The door behind him flew open at the same time, but all of his attention was for the demon he had called. Maybe it would be better that he'd missed the killing blow. Now the demon could have the pleasure of finishing off the girl himself.
While he was aware that company had arrived, he was still thrown off by the body that crashed into him from behind, sending the knife skittering across the floor. He wasn't surprised by the face he saw illuminated above him. He had figured Zoe would get here first. But it didn't matter now. He'd struck the blow and called the demon. She wasn't going to stop anything. Kalika would still die. The only thing she would accomplish would be possibly joining Kalika.
The face above him matched the one on the altar exactly. It was a side effect of a recent spell. The girl was Kalika's double down to the last hair. But she wasn't a twin exactly...she was a doppelganger. A doppelganger who was probably going to kill him if the demon didn't get her first.
But, maybe he could reason with her. "Kaliska...you don't want to kill me." He began, hoping she would hear him out. By the look on her face, that hope might be a lost cause, so he continued quickly. "Let the demon have her and you'll be the only one left. If you both live and they find out, they'll put you back together. It wouldn't be hard to do. Do you really want to go back to that?" He paused there. When they were like this...witch and doppelganger, they weren't just two different personalities, they were completely different people. He figured he could keep them that way and have Kaliska on his side...
"Go on." Kaliska was actually listening. She was the warrior side, the darker side that Kalika had hidden away while Kalika was the magic side. If Kalika were to die, she would be able to remain herself. Of course if he was lying, killing Kalika could be the death of her as well...
Tony was encouraged by the fact that she hadn't killed him yet. He didn't really have the strength to fight back after this last spell. "Once she's gone it'll be only you. These people are used to dealing with weird shit. They wouldn't cast you out. They would probably try to take care of you or some shit like that. And if you didn't want to stay...whatever. You would be able to do whatever you want. What you want." Was this going to be enough? Convincing her that she wanted to be herself rather than just a part of the whole that she and Kalika created together?
They didn't have much time, the demon was coming through, but..."Will her death be mine as well?" Would he tell the truth? He shook his head. "No, it doesn't have to be. I can make sure it's not, but you have to let me live for that to happen."
Kaliska considered that and then shifted to stand, yanking Tony to his feet as well as she turned them to face the portal. It depended on if this spell was going to work or not. If not...they would have to find some other way to get rid of Kalika.
The portal was open and the upper part of the demon was coming through. His gaze flitted across them. Kaliska and Tony standing and watching, Ari on the floor near the door, and Kalika on the altar before him...As he reached for the bleeding sacrifice meant for him, there was an inhuman scream and the portal began to close and the demon was pulled back inside, back to whatever hell he had come from. The spell had failed.
Kaliska looked expressionlessly at the spot where the portal had been and then turned her gaze on Tony. "Well...that didn't work. Now what?"
